The Bowrington Arcade takes up the ground floor of a large building now known as Hartshorn House. The building was originally the local Co-operative Stores and was opened in 1910. The top floor was known as the Casino Ballroom complete with a beautifully polished wooden floor. The top floor was also used as a roller skating rink in the 1920’s and 1930’s. The middle floor housed a billiard hall until the late 50’s with three large snooker tables. When the Co-operative Society were using the building later on there was a Bank on this floor. The building was left empty in the early 80’s when the Co-operative Society closed many of their local shops, and was in danger of becoming so dangerous that it was threatened with demolition. Fortunately the local council together with some forward thinking local businessmen took the decision to save it. The building was renovated in keeping with its original outward appearance but with flats on the top floor, offices on the first floor and the Bowrington Arcade consisting of shops and café on the ground floor. Our shop, Maesteg Knitting Crafts, has been there since the building was re-opened in 1988. Our business itself, however, started in 1979 in the front room of a house near the town centre.
